In many cases of fire safety application, the understanding of fire behavior is considered as the most basic process for designing a fire prevention system. The presence of a wall near the fire source can strongly influence the entrainment rate and asymmetric behavior of the fire plume and it may cause different fire development scenario from free burning fire. As a preliminary study of these issue, the present study examines the fire behavior near wall and corner. A series of CFD calculation using FDS(Fire Dynamics Simulator) 6.1 are conducted to simulate the fire behavior near wall and the results are compared with empirical correlations. A lateral integration of heat release rate at a height was used to estimate the flame height of asymmetric fire and the flame height is assumed to be where the cumulative normal value of lateral integration of heat release rate with height is 99 %. The puffing frequency predicted by FDS model was well matched with a empirical correlation for free burning fire and it was not greatly influenced by wall. The calculated flame height for free burning fire was in good accordance with Alpert’s correlation and over-predicted for the wall and corner fire. The FDS model shows acceptable results for fire characteristics near wall. In this manner, this study improves our understanding of complex fire behavior and feasibility of computational fire analysis.
