The world of sport reflects society. The role of women in today's society has evolved dramatically during the past 100 years. Sport has experienced this evolution, but not fast enough. The first time a discussion of women' s competition appears in the minutes of the IOCsession is for the 1910 session at Luxembourg. The organizing committee for the 1912 Sotokholm Olympic Games proposed the inclusion of women' swimming events. And from then, during each successive decade, the discussion continued. In 1900 at the 2nd Olympic Games in Paris women made their debut. The only two femle sports were tennis and golf. In 1904, they were allowed into archery. In 1988, they competed in 17 events', in 1992, in 19 sports, in 1996, in 21 sport out of a total of 26 sports on the Olympic programe. This year in sydney, at the X XVll Games of the modem era, women will compete in 25 sports and men in 27. Nearly 40Yo of the approximately 10,300 athletes at Sydney will be women. The IOC has established as a goal that women comprise at least 10M of the decision making boards in throughout the Olympic Movement by December 31, 2000, with the goal increasing to at least 209o by 2005. The IOC met the at least 1096 goal for itself in 1998. Many National Olympic Committees, regional organizations and many International sports federations have also accomplished this action. What a difference the 20th century has made, certainly on the field of paly. There are many women prepared and able to work on behalf of sport. The world of sports has been greatly enriched through providing women the opportunity to experience sport at the highest level. The fature of sport for us all clearly depends on developing new resources. We know that the population of women represented an underutilized resource. And we know that the full power of women supporting sport has still to come3he 100 Years of women's participation in the Olympic Games.
