The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of aqua aerobic exercises on hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), cardiovascular risk factor (CRF), human growth hormone (HGH) among elderly women with and without type II diabetes mellitus, and to investigate the relations between these three items. Subjects were 36 elderly women. They were divided into 2 groups: (1) type II diabetes mellitus group (DG, n=16), (2) non-diabetes mellitus group (NDG, n=20). All subjects performed 12 weeks aqua aerobic exercises (60 minutes per day, 2 days per week, 50~80%HRR). After practicing aquarobics for 12 weeks, we analyzed the differences between pre- and post-test results. The results were as followings. First, HbA1c level in DG wasn`t changed significantly after 12 weeks aqua aerobic exercise, whereas NDG showed a significant increase in HbA1c. Second, CRF level in DG was significantly decreased after 12 weeks aquarobics, however, the decrease of CRF in NDG wasn`t significant. Third, there was no significant change in HGH level between groups and measurement times. Fourth, the decrease in CRF of NDG after 12 weeks aqua exercise was significantly related to the reduction of HbA1c and to the elevation of HGH. In summary, 12 weeks aqua aerobic exercises in elderly women with type II diabetes didn`t triggered a significant reduction in HbA1c level, whereas it was related to maintenance the HbA1c levels below 7%. This type of exercise also related to reduction of CRF in DG, which may result in the decrease of the possibility of micro-blood vessel-related complications and cardiovascular diseases. 12 weeks aquarobics also revealed the possibility of maintenance in HGH level, which might be related to maintaining the insulin sensitivity in elderly women. This study also suggests that if NDG concentrated on decrease in CRF by practicing aqua aerobic exercise it could be beneficial for the protection from diabetes mellitus in non-diabetic elderly women.
