The purpose of this study is to comparatively analyse one-dimension configurational classifiers’ categorization aspects in Korean and Chinese and investigate the motivators of them.
In Chapter 1, classifiers’ concept and the need for investigating onedimensional classifiers’ categorization aspects of Korean and Chinese was addressed. In Chapter 2, the object words and method of this study was introduced. In Chapter 3 and 4, based on the usages, the categorization aspects of eight one-dimensional classifiers each in Korean and Chinese were investigated and contrasted. Macroscopically, both in Korean and Chinese, one-dimensional classifiers’ categorization objects can be divided up into visible bounded entities, visible unbounded entities, and invisible objects. This similarity is caused by the prototype-based categorization cognitive mechanism shared by all human beings. The differences appear in some detailed aspects. They can be construed by cognitive tendencies and cultural experiences. In Chapter 5, the summary includes the discussion and the expectation for a follow-up study.
