The purpose of this study is to find an appropriate translation of ??αγγ?λιον α??νιον which is found in Rev.14:6. Since ??αγγ?λιον α??νιον has been understood to be related mostly to the saving gospel available through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, translating those particular words seems to be no problem at all. But as a matter of fact, it is not so. The word ??αγγ?λιον appears only in Rev. 14:6, and without an article. Throughout the entire New Testament, the combination of ??αγγ?λιον with α??νιον occurs only once, and its cognate verb ??αγγ?λιζω as an active voice verb form is found only in Revelation 10:7 and 14:6. The latter is important because the general sense of “proclaiming the gospel” is related with ??αγγ?λιζομαι, the middle voice verb form used in other places of the NT.
To justify the translation of ??αγγ?λιον α??νιον in Rev. 14:6 in the sense of judgment rather than salvation, two principles are applied: the issue of consistency and context, and the issue of culture and meaning. According to Nida’s translation theory, functional equivalence is preferred to formal correspondence. Meaning should be more appreciated than form. Form must be changed in order to preserve the content of the message.
Firstly, translation of ??αγγ?λιον α??νιον are compared among English Bible versions and Korean Bible versions. And then interpretation of ??αγγ?λιον α??νιον is compared among some prominent commentaries. As a result, juridical side of ??αγγ?λιον is disclosed in commentaries. Secondly, using the two principles mentioned above, the context of Rev. 14:6 is investigated, and the linguistic culture of the word ??αγγ?λιον is developed along with the inter-textuality of the word. Finally, a desirable Korean translation of ??αγγ?λιον α??νιον is suggested as a conclusion.
