Sediment replenishment, artificial addition of coarse sediment to downstream river channels of reservoir dams, is an increasing practice in Japanese, US rivers, to compensate sediment deficits downstream and to mitigate various channel morphological changes below dams. To date in Korean rivers, however, little practices in associated with such sediment replenishment researches have been reported despite a great number of large dams more than thirteen hundreds and most rivers nationwide regulated by the dams. The present study introduced a systematic approach for the sediment replenishment activities in the context of main objectives, planning and implementation based on overseas research projects which have been undertaken mainly in Japan and US, with the aim of proposing the research works in Korea in associated with the comprehensive sediment management in dams and rivers. In particular, determining quantity and quality of coarse sediment, and selecting an effective implementation method for adding and transporting sediment were addressed in corresponding to specific objectives and local hydrophysical restrictions in a basin, reservoir and river. In addition, the case studies conducted in Managawa River, Nunome River and Trinity River provided informative processes resulting in successful ecological river management and restoration.
