This research examines the overall Russian language culture with the special attention to the use of emoticons and changes of the Russian language system. As the cutting-edge technology for tele-communication continuously develops, many kinds of means of tele-communication also evolves in various ways.
To make it easy and efficient to express personal emotions in SNS or MMS-based circumstances, the majority of users employ emoticons in their text-communication. Emoticon is a compound word of ‘emotion’ and ‘icon’, which is synonymous to smiley, the shape of which looks like a smiley face.
There are several functions of Emoticon: i) to express personal emotion effectively, ii) to communicate succinctly, iii) to help communicate as a modal code, and iv) to play a role as a global and universal language. Emoticon serves as a sign in a semiotic system.
Sign consist of signifier (form) and signified (meaning). Emoticon is also used in the semiotic system. Within the frame of semiotics, emoticons facilitate addressees of communication to perceive addressers’ emotions in an easy and vivid way.
Emoticons evolve incessantly, i.e., letter emoticons 〉 image emoticons 〉 flash emoticons 〉 multimedia emoticons 〉 humoticons, which contain addresser’s face or gesture with the aid of webcam. With regard to diachronic development of tele-communication circumstances, SMS-based communication develops into SNS and MMS-based one. This kind of emoticon booms caused radical changes in the Russian language system. In cyber-texting circumstances, most of users utilize internet slangs or emoticon. Internet slang formed through the following word-formational mechanism, such as initialization/acronyms, syncope, apocope, loan expressions in phonology, mormorphology and phonetics.
Cyberspace is a space where people with a variety of languages and cultures get together to communicate via smartphones or tablet PCs and so on. As the cyberspace changes like an organism, emoticons and the language system will keep changing in order to survive as the fittest in the future.
