The residential building fire in Uijeongbu on 10 January 2015 caused an estimated 5 deaths and 139 injuries. Until the end of March 2015, lots of small or large fires occurred, and fires were most prevalent in March. Building fires including residential buildings reported in causing more deaths, injuries, and property damages than fires occurring at other places. In order to protect people and properties from fires, fire safety in buildings should be thus ensured. The fire safety performance is also essential to be evaluated based on real fire testing.
The international test standards such as ISO and ASTM define the large-scale structural fire testing using simplified single elements and standardized temperature-time curves. This test method has advantages of control and reproducibility, and it is therefore possible to compare test results. However, this standard furnace testing has a limitation on demonstrate adequate structural performance in real fires. Recently, the interest in the large-scale non-standard structural testing using real fires and assembles with several members is thus getting increased, and a number of non-standard testing facilities have been constructed.
KS also defines the similar large-scale structural fire testing with the international test standards, and a few number of fire testing facilities such as KICT, KCL have been constructed in Korea for the fire testing. However, little research on the building fire safety by the structural fire testing using real fires and assembles has been conducted.
In order to improve the fire safety in building, the fire safety performance should be evaluated based on the real fire testing using the real-scale structures or systems.
