Both Stanley Hauerwas and Robin Gill are known as the leading theologians in the world theological circle. In terms of theological position, while Hauerwas represents theological purists, Gill stands for theological realists. Expecially, their writings on theological bioethics are widely read in the global context. However, their works are not well known to Korean theologians. In this regard, this paper seeks to compare Hauerwas` view with Gill`s view on theological bioethics. This study could help to establish the future direction of theological bioethics in Korea. The main body of this paper is divided into four parts. Firstly, the developments of two scholars` theological bioethics are studied. Here, we will look into each scholar`s different emphasis on theological bioethics. Secondly, each scholar`s view on the beginning of life is reviewed. Whereas Hauerwas develops his view on the beginning of life through the study of IVF, abortion, and the handicapped, Gill is focused on the study of embryonic stem cell, gene therapy, and abortion to develop his view on that. Thirdly, each scholar`s view on the end of life is studied. Here while Hauerwas concentrates on the understanding of suffering, death, the meaning of medicine, brain death, and terminally ill patients, Gill has a concern on the issues of euthanasia and terminally ill patients. In the concluding remarks, we will compare two views on theological bioethics, and suggest the future direction of theological bioethics in Korea.
