The purpose of this study is to suggest multiple meanings of each verbs clearly so that for learners who are non-native Japanese speakers to lessen improper uses of such verbs which are “tsumeru” and “mitasu,” verbs representing movement inward, compared with Korean verb “chaeuda (채우다).” Not only is this meaning analysis end only with a categorization, but also consider from the prototype to the expansion of multiple meanings compared with cognitive linguistics Comparison from a cognitive linguistics expansion of meanings perspective shows that prototype expands according to metaphor and metonymy. “Tsumeru,” “mitasu,” and “chaeuda” all share the same meaning “to fill the inside of concrete materials.” “Tsumeru” further includes “without gap” and the meaning of “chaeuda” all includes “tsumeru” and “mitasu” to mean “to fill the inside of concrete materials without gap.” There are no similarities between the inner movement of abstract materials for “tsumeru” and “chaeuda,” but shows similarities between “mitasu” and “chaeuda.” Characteristics for “tsumeru” have positive expansion of meanings such as “to fulfill,” “to gap in,” “to focus,” or “to reach a decision,” but for movement inward, negative meanings like “to narrow,” “to reduce,” or “to cut down” also can be characterized as part of the meaning.
