A funeral carrier has long history as a means of carrying the dead in funeral rites. Most of villages had a funeral carrier to use in funeral rites in Korea. Because it was necessary to Mourner’s house in absolute. Most of villagers felt to be a burden to pay the expenses of making a funeral carrier individually. So they fulfilled it in common.
A funeral carrier changed wooden it into paper-made funeral carrier by reason of social change. The user and the maker of a funeral carrier faced to new change in approaching of industrial society. They didn’t use frequently a funeral carrier or substituted for new carrier means with social change. The makers of a funeral carrier in Cheonan city had alternatives their own way and try to solve difficulties really. A skilful man lead to make a funeral carrier after Korea was freed from the rule of Japanese imperialism. The professional makers appeared to make it with the lapse of time. The maker made a funeral carrier with the establishment and the change one’s profession after 1970’s. Four manufactures closed down their business by reason of personal problems and new recognition of funeral method, appearance of new carrier. There is only Daegyunggongye(대경공예) as a manufacture in Cheonan City. Four manufactures was managed sustainedly in the center of business district until the closure of business.
Most of villagers visited manufactures in Cheonan city by train or bus. There are three large size markets and a five-day interval village market near Cheonan station. Cheonan city is convenient traffic and market in harmony. Manufactures made use of the good conditions of central business district in proper. The conveient traffic and the good conditions of business district made an impact on deciding on locating their place of business.
Manufactures sold their funeral carriers in northen and western area of Choongnam. Cheonan is a city where business is active and traffic is convenient. So it has a good conditions to manage the funeral carrier business. It means that traffic and business district are closely related with the funeral carrier business. I searched their activity and features on the basis of investigation of manufactures managing from 1970’s to 2011 in Cheonan city.
