As China enters into the Ming Dynasty the merchant class grow to be an important class thanks to the drastic development of commerce economy. This social trend is naturally well reflected in the Huaben story which was a popular genre at that time. That merchants appear as main characters in stories and novels should be noted. Especially in short Huaben stories, as represented by those in San Yan and Er Pai, merchants appear as main characters and the commerce activities of merchants are mainly depicted. Of the 120 stories included in San Yan, about 50 stories mention merchants or have merchants as main characters. But only 20 of them meet the requirements to be considered a merchant novel, and “Jiang Xingge Reencounters His Pearl Shirt” is the most representative merchant novel from San Yan. So examining “Jiang Xingge Reencounters His Pearl Shirt” can tell much about the characteristics of merchant novels during the Ming Dynasty. First, almost all of the main and surrounding characters appearing in “Jiang Xingge Reencounters His Pearl Shirt” are merchants, and some of them are described as merchants with the qualities of an intellect either internally or externally. The advent of the new merchant image translates into the collapse of the traditional four class caste and the uplifting of the merchant class in terms of social status. Second, this work of literature vividly describes the various kinds of commerce activity and their latent hardships. In particular, all the story’s development and conflicts happen on the trails of Jiang and Chen’s commerce. Finally the values and cultures of merchants are well reflected in this novel. For example, the merchants’ respect for their profession and their effort toward commerce is reflected in the story as well as their liberal and mature mindset for love and sexuality.
