This article explains the advent and growth of the labor rights movements of youth precarious workers in contemporary Korean society with a case study on the Youth Community Union (YCU) and the Arbeit Workers" Union (AWU). Leaders of both organizations have defined the contemporary youth generation as precarious workers, and have developed a new type of labor movements for representing their labor rights. First, this paper describes the background of their emergence, the process of their organizational growth and their main campaigns against social inequalities, which have embraced both struggles for redistribution and for recognition in support of youth precarious workers. Second, we identify the originality of this method of interest representation. In place of the conventional weapons of trade union movements, the YCU and the AWU have achieved successful movement outcomes by means of mobilizing the power of the public sphere, through which they have been able to overcome the structural problems of representing youth precarious workers, who usually are isolated in low-wage service sectors. Finally, this article attempts to compare the two labor rights organizations with community unions in Japan in order to make the distinct characteristics of our case more clear. In conclusion, we emphasize that the labor-rights movement experiments of the YCU and the AWU will serve to increase the interest-representation capacities of labor union movements in South Korea.
