A standard-based R&D road-map for smart logistics is developed in order to help industries to deal with increasingly competitive environment globally. The main benefit of this study is that it provides information to help a government and company to identify critical technologies and technology gaps and finding ways to leverage R&D investments. While most technology road-maps for logistics have been used by many companies and industries, the focus has been a product, neither on a service nor a standard.
This road-map categorizes five major areas: intelligent logistics, sustainable logistics, safe and secured logistics, fresh (cold chain) logistics, and service design for logistics.
Development of the road-map includes: (1) define the scope and boundaries for the technology roadmap. (2) identify the product, service and standard that will be the focus of the road-map. (3) specify the major technology areas. (4) define each technology and their time lines. (5) Recommend the product, service and standard alternatives that should be pursued. (6) develop an implementation plan for next 10 years.
This road-map may be utilized for strategic planning on national R&D and standardization related to logistics. The results may also help a company to improve their relative competitiveness in their logistics and supply chain efficiency. Future studies on detail action plans such as e-commerce technological road-map should be considered.
