Microbiological laboratories are special, often unique, environments that may pose special infectious disease risks to persons working in or near them. In 1986 Kim and Lee published the first report of laboratory infections in korea involving 102 cases which were based on a questionnaire. The biological agents present various degrees of hazard in different countries. In this study micro-organisms with varying degree of individual and community risk were classified into four general risk groups. It is an important precondition that classifing of micro-organisms on the basis of hzazard to biohazard control. The results are summarized as follows; 1. Various micro-organisms were classified into four risk groups on the basis of the hazard to control the biohazard in rnicrobiological laboratories. 2. Since micro-organisms were classified on the basis of the hazard only, if further information is available on the attributes of micro-organisms, role of vectors, and susceptibility of humans, reclassify may be necessary in the future. 3. A few species of micro-organisms which were left unclassified, because of their unclear natural histories, should be classified sfter further study. 4. Classification of micro-organisms on the basis of hazard is quite different from systematic microbiology. Not only the fauna of micro-organisms are different by countries, but also distribution of vectors and herd immunities of the populations are different depending on the geography. Consequently the classification of micro-organisms on the basis of hazard can not be the same in every country. 5. When the laboratory handles hazardous micro-organisms more csrefully, laboratory infection could be controled. Especially the classification of micro-organisms will promote safe work in handling clinical specimens and storage, and transportation of micro-organisms. 6. Successful classification of rnicro-organisms alone could not prevent laboratory infection unless the laboratories comply with the regulation.
