The purpose of this study was to analyze forms and aesthetic characteristics of the patterns expressed in Baekje relics in different eras according to capital city of Baekje, and to help understanding of the developments of Baekje costume culture. Method of this study was to review literatures such as excavation reports, museum picture book and previous studies and Internet resource related to the Baekje. The data analyzed were animal, floral, and geometric patterns expressed on metal crafts and tiles of Baekje. The results were as follows. First, only a few patterns from relics of Hanseong era were identified. Patterns used most frequently were the geometric patterns of diamond shape on gilt bronze ornaments, and the tree patterns of coin tree shape on tiles. Patterns in Hanseong era showed aesthetics of simplicity, abstraction and modernity. Second, relics of Woongjin era of Baekje had more patterns than those of Hanseong era. Patterns used most frequently were fire-shaped honeysuckle patterns and hexagonal-shaped patterns. Patterns in Woongjin era had aesthetics of natural, sophisticated, luxurious and elegant characteristics. Third, relics of Sabi era of Baekje had the most diverse patterns among three eras. Patterns used most frequently were ornamental lotus pattern. Pearl rounded pattern and landscape painting were newly developed. Patterns in this period had aesthetic characteristics of rhythm, luxury, femininity and pictorial representation. Fourth, Baekje patterns showed changes in forms and aesthetic characteristics according to different eras. From this, we were able to infer changing costume culture of Baekje, including changing patterns in Baekje relics. The geometric pattern in Hanseong era exhibited the most modernity among the three eras. The results of this study can be used as a basis for understanding aesthetic qualities of Baekje culture, and can be applied to create a suitable pattern by each capital city for the restoration and reproduction of Baekje costume.
