Like many other parliaments around the world, the German parliament faces a wave of criticism. Its members are accused of incompetence, financial greed, corruptibility, cronyism, and opportunism. New surveys show that the German public not only increasingly criticises its representatives but also starts to ignore them.
Democracies face many new challenges that are rooted in a complex and interconnected world. With a complicated subject matter, decision making processes accordingly become arcane and aloof from the public.
Apart of those inherent problems, the attacks on the German parliament are largely baseless. A detailed analysis of the incomes of the members of the German Bundestag, including an international comparison and comparison with the salaries of other occupations, shows that their remuneration still is rather reasonable. Very strict transparency regulations make unlawful lobbyism or corruption unlikely. The academic qualifications of the German representatives are far above the average of the population.
The Germans still have every reason to be content with their democratic system of government.
