This study aims to examine how the black and white storytellers` coordination in the four short stories of Thomas Nelson Page`s In Ole Virginia contributes to valorizing the legacies of the Old South. The rediscovery of the Old South is used as a means of subsuming the American South into the ideology of one single nation in postbellum American society. The Civil War rendered in this novel not only destroyed the ancient regime grounded by the plantation slavery but also uncovered the usable pasts of the Old Sough. The re-illumination of the Southern values works as a building block of the unified North and South. The ex-slave narrators have brought back their beautiful memories on the plantation life. They not only held up the plantation economy on behalf of the deceased white males, but also assumed the role of historical witnesses-or the matchmakers between a Southern belle and a Yankee soldier-by passing the usable antebellum heritage in the Southern society down to postbellum American society. On the other hand, the white Southerners, who were dead or went through tribulations during wartime, played the roles of tragic heroes and heroines in the historical stage of the Civil War. Especially, the white narrators reflected on the flip-side of the American South by focusing on both atrocious racism in the plantation and white-men`s helpless deaths in the battlefields. Consequently, the interplay of black and white characters` double voices throughout the entire novel has the readers try to keep a balanced look at the Southern society.
