본 논문은 적정기술 적용 제품디자인의 다양한 접근방식에 대한 분석과 지속가능한 사회를 위한 앞으로의 과제를 논의함으로써 국내 적정기술 적용 제품디자인 개발에 필요한 이론적이고 체계적인 학술자료를 제공하고자 연구되어졌다. 연구범위는 적정기술 개념과 특성에 대한 이론적 고찰, 사용자 경험 중심의 사회적 기업 및 국내 적정기술 적용 제품디자인 현황 분석, 그리고 지속가능한 사회를 위한 앞으로의 과제에 대하여 논하며 결론에 이르고 있다. 연구방법은 인터넷을 이용한 국내외 정보 D/B 및 네트워크 검색, 논문과 단행본을 포함한 도서·출판물등 문헌조사를 통한 고찰 및 분석이 중심이 되었다. 연구 내용과 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 적정기술은 지역사회 발전과 공동체 역량 강화에 기여하고 환경에 대한 영향을 줄이면서 삶의 질을 향상시킬 수 있는 기술로서 소규모, 분산형, 노동집약적, 저비용, 친환경, 지역성, 사용자 참여, 유연성 등을 특징으로 하고 있다. 둘째, 배려의 기술 혹은 따뜻한 기술로서의 적정기술은 현지의 필요성에 맞춰 첨단 기술이 가진 기능을 적합하게 개선하거나 창의적인 다른 용도로의 전환 등새롭고 다양한 접근방식으로 광범위한 제품디자인 영역에 적용되어지고 있다. 셋째, 국내에서의 적정기술 제품디자인의 지속적 시장 확대를 위해 ``시장중심``의 접근방식이 필요하며 지역사회의 역량을 강화하고 삶의 질을 높이기 위한 기술의 공익적 가치를 추구하는 사회적기업과 디자이너들의 역할 확대가 요구되어졌다. 마지막으로 적정기술을 필요로 하는 지역 주민 중심의 기술 개발, 적정기술교육·운영·유지관리를 위한 지역 기관과의 연계, 그리고 ‘인간중심’ 디자인사고에 의한 적정기술 활용 BOP(Base of the Pyramid) 비즈니스 모델에 의한 접근방식으로 지속가능 제품디자인영역과 시장을 더욱 확대해 나가며, 궁극적으로 인간에 대한 존중과 자연과의 공존 모색을 기반으로 한 적정기술 적용 제품디자인의 개발을 지향해야 한다. 이와 같은 고찰과 분석 내용을 바탕으로 본 연구에서는 재생할 수 없는 자원을 낭비하지 않고 현대의 지식과 경험에 대한 적극적 활용으로 분산화를 유도하며 지역을 기반으로 지역주민에 의한 생산기술을 지향하는 인간중심 적정기술의 다양한 개발과 접근방식의 필요성을 제기하였으며, IT·CT·BT와 도시기반시설 인프라 구축 등에 의한 융복합 적정기술로의 개념적 변화와 함께 한정된 낙후 지역이나 주민들이 아닌 대다수 글로벌 소비자들을 대상으로 하는 시장중심 적정기술 적용 제품디자인 개발의 가능성을 제시하였다. 본 연구가 국내 적정기술 기반 제품디자인 개발과 시장성 확대를 위한 이론적·체계적 분석 자료로 활용되기를 기대한다.

This article is designed to offer theoretical data and definite analysis materials for extensive researches and development of a variety of product design utilizing appropriate technology in domestic by suggestion a diversity approaches to the product design based on appropriate technology and discussing about a challenging subject in the future shifted toward sustainable society. Main scopes of this article are formed with a theoretical study on a concept and a characteristics of appropriate technology, an analysis on social enterprises centered on user experience and present condition of product design utilizing appropriate technology, and finally come to the conclusion through a suggestion a challenging subject in the future shifted toward sustainable society. The main method of this article is to review and analyze the data from Internet D/B in domestic and abroad, and variety of literatures including thesis, books, periodicals and the other publications. The summary of contents and results of this article are as below. First, an appropriate technology has a specific characteristic of its such as small size, distributed system, labor intensive, low cost, eco-friendly, regional, user participation, and flexible enforcement, and to contribute to community development and enablement, ultimately could improve the quality of human life besides to lessen impact on the environment. Second, an appropriate technology as a technology for concern or warmth is already applied to diverse product design fields by new and various approaching methods which makes high-tech features could be suitable for improvement, and for other creative uses of transitions. Third, market-centered approach is required for continuing market extension of product design based on appropriate technology, and role expansion of social enterprises and designers who are in pursuit of the public interest values of technology are demanded for strengthening the capacity of local communities and heighten quality of human life. Finally, sustainable product design and market should be extended with technology development for the local residents who needs appropriate technology, connection with the local agencies for education·management·maintenance of appropriate technology, as approaching methods by BOP business model applied by appropriate technology focused on design thinking mainly with ‘people-oriented’, and development of product design applied by appropriate technology based on respecting man``s life and dignity and exploring the coexistence of nature should be intended. As a result of all of above researches, there are some needs to be raised such as diverse development and approach method of appropriate technology based on design thinking of people-oriented those have to do not waste resources that cannot be played, induce to de-centralization utilizing an active advantage of knowledges and experiences in recent, and intend to the manufacturing technique by local residents. Furthermore, development possibilities appling an appropriate technology on market-oriented, targeted at global consumers not dealing with limited backwater regions or local residents, and conceptual changes as a convergence appropriate technology by constructed IT·CT·BT and urban infrastructure are presented in this paper. It was expected that this paper would be utilized as theoretical·systematic data for developing product design applied by appropriate technology in domestic.
