Seeking to defend the realist fiction that characterizes the nineteenth-century life, William Dean Howells demands that the subject matter of contemporary life be objectively and honestly represented as it is. In The Rise of Silas Lapham, Howells shows the representational strategies required to keep the objective-aloof point of view of narrative, which might be thought to strengthen the
verisimilitude of the novel. He uses Lapham’s daughter Penelope as a focalizer or an observer, rather than a participant character of the novel. But as Penelope gets entangled in love affair, she loses the capacity to provide the witty, insightful accounts of other characters whom she shows in the earlier part; she adopts the sentimental role of a heroine in a popular romance. Indeed Howells’s double characterization of Penelope causes an irony, which means both the impossibility of objective representation and the unavoidable acceptance of sentimentality in the realist fiction. The irony also seems to mean a major dilemma Howells is forced to confront and overcome for his successful completion of realism.
