This paper aims to investigate how different nationalities and the length of slay in Korea affect the immigrant workers` Korean language proficiency from a syntactic point of view. For this study we compared Vietnamese and Sri Lankan workers` spoken sentences with those of native Korean workers. It was concluded that both nationalities of immigrant workers share similar syntactic complexity with that of native Korean workers in matrix clauses, regardless of the length of their stay in Korea. However, in embedded clauses their complexities are lower than that of native Korean workers. Embedded clauses dominate the syntactic complexity of the whole sentences. Therefore, the immigrant workers` sentences have lower complexity than those of native Korean workers especially due to their relatively inactive embedded clauses. Sri Lankan workers show better proficiency with longer stay. There is, however, no difference between the length of stay with Vietnamese workers. This may result from the fact that Vietnamese word order and inflectional system are different from Korean. In addition, we compared these results with that of Korean language learners for academic purpose studied previously.
