This thesis focuses on ``쇠벼라``, the place name. The thesis treats its location, its word formation, and the meaning of ``소`` and ``벼라``. Since the existing explana1ions on theses two are· thought to be insufficient, especially, the location and meaning of ``벼라`` mainly makes up the thesis. The ``쇠벼라`` is located on river sides between ``쇠꼬지 in Changdong lee(the village) and ``다락바위``(attic rock) in Nuam lee in Gagum myun, Chungju City. The word ``쇠벼라`` is ``소(ㅎ)[淵]+｜+벼라``. The original meaning of ``벼라`` is ``the cliff near waters``, and, furthermore, its second meaning is ``the path on the cliff near waters``. It seems that the place name containing the ``벼라`` has been changed from the place name with ``cliff`` into ``the path on the cliff``, and, thus, the meaning transfer has been occurred. Therefore, the meaning of ``벼라`` has been changed from ``the cliff near the pond`` into ``the path on the cliff near the pond``.
