This paper attempts to illuminate the historical development of nouns in Korean language with a particular focus on the changes in noun categories and noun denotation. Regarding the changes in noun categories, this paper argues that in terms of categories, nouns and determiners were not separated before the medieval Korean period. Regarding the changes in noun denotation, through a survey of the ways in which loanwords have been introduced into Korean culture in each period, this paper interrogates the assumption that most vocabulary of new culture was introduced into the Korean language through Japan at the time of enlightenment. Loanwords were given special attention in my discussion because loanwords, mostly being nouns, can serve as a useful means by which the developing process of noun denotation can be studied. This paper also examines bound nouns within a larger context of grammaticalization, while acknowledging at the same time a phenomenon of degrammaticalization called the "nominalization of affixes and bound nouns." Finally, the paper concludes by looking at the ways in which color nouns and numerical nouns are developed and NP while noun sentense in middle Korean.
