A painter, Jeong, Hyeon-ung and a poet, Baek Seok worked at the same company in the late 1930s and their friendship grew at that time. Baek Seok is an intellectual poet who wrote poetries based on the northern regional emotion and sentiment in agricultural areas. Jeong, Hyeon-ung is a painter whose early paintings include landscape paintings and portraits of a seated woman of the Joseon dynasty while his later works became to consist of paintings that depict the lives of Korean people under the colonial rule in a realistic manner. One of his masterpieces is ‘One corner of waiting room (대합실의 한 구석).’ One interesting thing related to the painting is that when Jeong, Hyeon-ung was working on the painting, Baek Seok left for Manchuria and released a poet titled ‘In the Northern Sects (북방에서)’ and subtitled ‘To Jeong, Hyeon-ung (정현웅에게).’ The common ground of the poem and the painting confirms that they interact artistically with each other. Baek Seok and Jeong, Hyeon-ung shared a feat also after the division of Korea in the late 20th century. The Korean war forced Jeong, Hyeon-ung to be included in the list of painters defected to North Korea, while Baek Seok returned to Pyeongyang, North Korea from Manchuria. However, both failed to reconcile with North Korean regime and took a step back from the front lines. Official reunion of Jeong, Hyeon-ung and Baek Seok happened in 1957 when Jeong, Hyeon-ung painted the book cover and the arthur’s portrait for Baek Seok’s collection of children’s poem, ‘Four Crayfish Brothers (집게네 네 형제)’. This proves that the days when the two were actively engaged as a poet and a painter belong to different age. For the proposition, ‘An artistic communion between a poet and a painter’, Baek Seok and Jeong, Hyeon-ung will serve as a greatly appropriate case that requires attention. Especially, when compared with the status of Baek Seok in the Korean literature history and when compared with the Jeong, Hyeon-ung’s activities as a realist painter, what the lesson learned from the two artists suggests is not small.
