While the institutionalization of nation narratives in the West and Japan was distinctly led by universities, the situation in colonial Korea was quite different. Being colonized meant that the nation narratives in two forms - literature and history - would develop outside of the university system. Consequently, a ‘national academism’ was necessary for Keijō Imperial University to wield its academic authority during the colonial period. After liberation, the two forms of nation narratives which had functioned as certain modes of resistance quickly took root in the rapidly growing universities in Korea. Having gone through institutionalization twice during the conflict-ridden nation-building stage, nation narratives of resistance were almost completely absorbed and settled into the institution after the end of the cold war.
Nevertheless, as soon as the nation-state and universities embraced modern historiography, this seemingly stable combination began to unravel. Modern universities were now faced with having to prepare a departure from both the nation narratives based on modern historiography and the nation-state for which they had provided the ideologies. The changes in the capitalist labor market had come to seriously undermine the very conditions upon which universities had built htemselves.
Having developed within the framework of a mononational history, the two forms of nation narratives are now faced with a crisis as Korea is being transformed into a multicultural society and ‘big data’ is emerging. Modern historiography, which has pursued the ideal of a mononational historical progress, with ‘science’ as its primary weapon, is bound to suffer a particularly heavy blow. The two forms of nation narratives may have to break down its own basis of being, just as universities have been driven to do.
