Warmer or wetter pre-breeding conditions are known to advance the onset of egg-laying in last-minute adjustments of the breeding phenology of birds. We analyzed 9-year nesting data of oriental storks (Ciconia boyciana) breeding in captivity related to pre-nesting climate conditions such as winter-spring temperature and precipitation. Our results showed that only temperature in December was highly associated with the onset of egg-laying. In addition, the delayed onset of egg-laying with warmer winter temperature was found in oriental storks in captivity with high nest proximity. This could be due to increased energetic demands for temporally extended social interactions under benign pre-nesting condition.
