Within the context of own versus other culture, migrant spouse marriages can be considered a direct import of the “other” culture. Although Taiwan’s social structure from the beginning has been one made up of immigrants, the phenomenon of migrant spouse weddings, starting in the 1980s, has clearly impacted Taiwanese society in different and much more complex poly-cultural ways than prior waves of immigration. This paper reviews the phenomenon of migrant marriages in Taiwan, considering how each of the three issues of migrant spouse plight, culinary culture integration and custodial grandparenting influences new immigrant acceptance and social engineering efforts.
