This study reviewed the efficacy of natural medicinal materials that known to have effects in treating atopic skin diseases through a review of the existing literature, and selected medicinal materials that have not been widely used as dye so far, but have the potential to be used as dyes. As a result, napa cabbage, which was identified as having yellow-based dye properties, was selected as the dye, and 7 “jeogori” (traditional Korean garment for the upper part of the body) for newborn babies ("baenaet jeogori") were designed and produced by using the method of variegated dyeing, which involves more time and effort than any other natural dyeing method, given the significance of the baenaet jeogori as the first clothing worn immediately after birth. First of all, in order to express the ymbolization of cloud patterns that represent flushness, fortune, numerous progeny and a successful career, 4 baenaet jeogori were made by dynamically depicting moving clouds through the method of variegated dyeing with vertical hemming in addition to broad-stitching on both edges of the body. In addition, 3 baenaet jeogori were made by symbolizing the shape of the Big Dipper in a wish for longevity and wealth on both edges of the body and by expressing stars, the sun, and the moon through the method of variegated dyeing on both sleeves. Traditional baenaet jeogori was made in clothes with a lining and with sewing cotton braided for adjustment, which served as a symbol of good health and long life. A small alteration was made unlined without back seams, shoulder seams, and side seams. A running stitch was used for armholes and side lines, and bias cut and bias strap for adjustment were used for practicality. Based on the results of this study, it is expected that in subsequent studies naturally dyed designs that use native plants effective in treating skin diseases can be used in modern garments and other natural dyeing resources can be discovered, which will help in the development of high value-added and practical products to enhance Korea’s global competitiveness.
