This paper tries to understand how Nogye‘s experience during wartime is embodied in his works. Among his works, this paper would focus on 〈Taepyeongsa〉 and 〈Seonsangtan〉, two Gasas that use war as major subject. Nogye‘s life both involves life of a soldier and Confucian scholar, and this fact differentiates his life from lives of other writers or Confucian scholars. Nogye, as a soldier who actually participated in war, wrote 〈Seonsangtan〉 and 〈Taepyeongsa〉, which were based on his real experience. His intention of creating those two works is written in collection of his works, and we would carefully examine his motive of creation and his intention based on this record. Using this as grounds, we would define his intention of creation.
Basically, Nogye tried his best to keep the basic principles of Confucian scholar and to demonstrate those principles himself throughout his life, and he did so. This is a core element in understanding his works. The fact that his works include lots of 전고 made his works to be underestimated up until now. However, it was because he was ‘Seongaja’. He was not only a good singer, but he was also talented in writing lyrics. Therefore, it was natural for him to use expressions of 전고 in parts of his works which bears conventional aspects in them.
And this is also related with Nogye’s works that were done in form of ‘Daejak’(works that he worte instead) and ‘Myeonjak’(works that he wrote by order). Nogye clearly stated his intention of creation for each works, not like other writers of Chosun dynasty. This can be seen as his intention of clearly showing that he had wrote works according to orders of others or as a ghostwriter of others. Thus, works that are done in form of ‘Daejak’(works that he worte instead) or ‘Myeonjak’(works that he wrote by order) had to be written in appropriate level of expressions and contents of the nobility.
As shown in 〈Taepyeongsa〉 or 〈Seonsangtan〉, reality of war and will of writer is specifically embodied in works. 〈Taepyeongsa〉 consoles and cheers up soldiers for the victory of war and represents sentiment of group that longs for peace. 〈Seonsangtan〉 embodies sentiment of resentment and lament about the war through Nogye’s voice. Nogye is also a Confucian scholar who strived to live his life keeping basic principles of scholar.
