Due to the rapid growth of aging population and the retirement of the baby boomers with increased 1~2 person households, the proportion of single or two person elderly households is expected to increase dramatically. As a result, demand for compact housing is expected to increase continuously for single or two person households. In order to satisfy this demand, Korean government introduced the ‘Urban Living Housing’ recently. And the single or two-person elderly households, who prefer a convenient location close to amenities and transportations, are one of the target groups for supply of Urban Living Housing.
However, the majority of the residents in ‘Urban Living Housing’ is young and single households. Therefore, Urban Living Housing is not an alternative housing for older adults so far. A discussion is needed on the vitalization of ’Urban Living Housing’ for the growing 1~2 person elderly households. The purpose of this study was to investigate present living conditions and opinions on Urban Living Housing of elderly residents who already living in a Urban Living Housing and to identify their housing needs and future plans for their later life. For the interview survey, 6 older residents in an Urban Living Housing were selected. By in-depth interviews, housing characteristics, physical space satisfaction and future housing plan were surveyed. Based on the conclusion of the study, two types of age-segregation and age-integration Urban Living Housing were proposed.
