The purpose of the study is to determine how the relations between Chae and Madang which are basically caused of Korean traditional housing are inherited to the present day. This study shows that residents’ the way of living environment is investigated by focusing on uses for Madang of Urban Hanok in order to examine empirically how the present day was in succession to traditional Madang. The results were as follows : 1) Although the details of the residential behavior are changed, the functions of Madang as multipurpose spaces are diversely transmitted in response to the present residents’ needs. 2) It is verified that one of the functions of Madang in the traditional Hanok has been recently omitted despite of the fact that it existed with the concept of garden such as backyard. From the viewpoint of inheriting and developing housing culture, it is necessary to consider the relation between inside and outside space that are not only Madang seen from inside of house but also Madang attracted in superb natural landscape from outside of the traditional Hanok.
