This study has first surveyed the methods of language classifications ; genealogical, morphological, geographical, and sociolinguistic, and has discussed the word-structure theories of 19th and early 20th century quoting examples from various world languages. The focus of this study is, however, placed on more modernized word-structure theories of Sapir, Greenberg, and Martinet. Sapir classified words, hence languages, on the basis of the relationship between the elements of a word; Pure-relational and Mixed relational. Each relation is again subdivided into Simple and Complex. Greenberg introduced the concept of index and parameter in analyzing word-structure. He used five patterns of indices and their interrelationship for his analysis; A(agglutination)/ J(junction), R(root)/W(word), A(affix)/w(word), O(order)/N(nexus). Martinet was not entirely free from the influence of Sapir. He classified words by the binary system of lexical and grammatical units, and further subclassified each unit into functional or non-functional. In discussing the theories of Sapir, Greenberg, and Martinet, relevant examples are presented to make their theories more convincing and understandable.
