This paper examines the English word across from a grammaticalization perspective. After showing the morpho-syntactic background and changes of meaning for the word across, it is demonstrated here that (1) various meanings of across can be divided into two---adverbial and prepositional meanings, that (2) this variety of meaning can be systematically schematized into motion, position, distribution and direction, showing longitudinal implication can not be included in the meanings of across, and most importantly, that (3) the changes in meaning can be explained in terms of several mechanisms of grammaticalization: generalization, metaphor, subjectification, image schema transformation and non-metaphoric schematic-transfer. It is revealed here that grammaticalization theory can give an adequate solution to the problem of meaning changes, because it can help us to see the meaning changes comprehensively, analyzing their motivations.
