This study aims to examine the metonymic expressions in the Gospel of John in the Bible and find out how metonymy was used in the ordinary language in those days. The results of the study are as follows: First, metonymy is widely used in the days of the Bible; second, it is used primarily for reference in the Bible-the non-referential use of metonymy is possible but the referential use in the Gospel of John is much more productive; third, a special case of the metonymy THE PART FOR THE WHOLE functions both referentially and non-referentially; finally, the metonymic expressions are found in the forms of ``verbs`` as well as ``nouns``.
