This study attempts to explain what kind of constraints word frequency would impose on word order with such devices as theme and rheme. Words of high frequency are located in front in sentences compared with those of low frequency, which is connected to the concept of theme and rheme that words of low information value come before those of high information value. If verbal elements of high information value are placed in the sentence- initial position, the constant principle of information will be violated and thus communication disorders will follow. While theme narrates information that is already known, rheme offers new information. According to the constant principle of information, theme cannot have information of high value but rheme can. Theme is usually high in frequency as it narrates known information and is short in length as it is represented in pronouns. On the contrary, rheme is low in frequency as it offers new information and is long. The study also tried to prove that the aphaeresis phenomenon can be explained with frequency as well as phonological conditions. The goal of the study is to show that word orders can have explanatory power through the concept of theme/rheme as well as frequency.
