The purpose of this study is to classify the forms and meaningful usages of Japanese conditional expressions TO, BA, TARA and NARA, and to analyze how conditional expressions are used in Japanese novels. The previous studies were mainly on the usage of Japanese conditional expressions. The results of the study show that conditional expressions are used differently according to the literary style, politeness, and discourse. The most affected of those three is the literary style. Written sentences commonly use TO and BA. TARA is most commonly used in discourses, but in colloquial sentences having more possibility to use honorific forms, TO and BA are used more frequently than TARA. In meaning usage the uses are differentiated by the discourse content. The main uses are fictional. The colloquial style has more fictional usage than the formal sentence style. In formal cases a statement style using a variety of TO, BA, TARA and NARA is used. In novels there is a higher possibility of conclusion usage. (Kumoh National Instiute of Technology)
