The purpose of this study is to investigate how prosodic features of utterance change depending on the types of adnominal constructions. We analyzed AP(accentual phrase) patterns, the duration of syllable and pause patterns within relative clause structures and compound nouns in utterances spoken by Seoul Korean speakers in their twenties. The results show that compound nouns and relative clause constructions composed of the same phonemes were different at the boundary position of accentual phrase and at tone pattern. In addition, the duration of word-final syllable of adnominal form was on average 1.6-fold longer in relative clause constructions than in compound noun. Furthermore, interference of accentual phrase boundary between relative clauses and modified nouns was more frequent in non-restrictive than in restrictive relative clause constructions. And the duration of word-final syllable of adnominal form was on average 1.2-fold longer in non-restrictive than in restrictive relative clauses. Unlike some previous studies where pauses were considered to be an indication of word or clause boundaries, the results in this study do not show pauses between adnominal form and modified nouns in either compound nouns or relative clause constructions. Our data suggest that AP boundary, AP tone pattern and syllable lengthening are more important than pauses to display syntactic and semantic differences in the sentences when phonemic condition is the same.
