This study investigates how Korean learners of English interpret the scope ambiguous sentences containing preverbal only (i.e. Donald only painted a picture). Focus ambiguity arises between VP scope (with only assigned to a verb phrase as a whole) and DO scope (with only restricted to the direct object). Despite the significance of the scope assignment in focus interpretation (Pateron et al, 2006; Jackendoff, 1972; Krifa, 1992; Rooth, 1992), Korean learners of English appear to have a scarcity of scope knowledge that requires the resolution of focus ambiguity for preverbal only. In a picture truth value judgement task that participants were asked to compare a target sentence with which a picture either match or mismatch, the results showed that L2ers prefer to employ VP scope analysis than its counterpart analysis.
