The pirpose of this study is to search for the name of Silla and to establish its meaning. For this, bringing forward the problem of reading Ancient literature with only Chinese character, this paper focuses on the linguistic syllable circumstance, and on the sound of Chinese character, and phonology, notation because these involve linguistic factors of those days. Becaus the linguistic circumstance of enacting nation`s name was under Open syllable, some phonemic phenomena appeared in Ancient Korean. That`s to say, the power of drawing vowelchanged[·] ito [ㅏ/ㅓ/ㅗ/ㅜ/ㅡ]. As we read the records with the notation of those days, wecould clarified the name of a country Silla and its another notation. As a result, the name of a country Silla is [sere], and its meaning is “spreading the light on the world”.
