This paper purposes to explain construal and perspectival modes in terms of directions of viewing correlative events in Korean conjoined sentences. For this purpose, chapter 2 reviews basic notions and onceptions of ‘Construal’ and ‘Universal principels in Figure-Ground assignment to events in an interevent relation’, ‘Direction of Viewing’ suggested by Talmy (2000). Along with the theoretical background, in chapter 3 an analysis and explanation are attempted on how meaning and structure of Korean conjoined sentences are constructed; ① the scene the temporal complex consisting of two event is represented by coordinate conjoined sentence when the location of the perspective point of language user move itself from event1 to event2 and is represented by subordinate conjoined sentence when the direction of one’s viewing move from event1 to event2. ② the event in the Groundsubordinate clause is conceptualized as the basis, i.e. the earlier-occurring, cause, background or precondition for the event in the Figuremain clause, and that such assignment is reversed by perspective point of language user. The result of this analysis seems to prove that a meaning and a structure of conjoined sentences in Korean reflect how a language user construes a given context such as event and situation.
