The purpose of this study was to analyze the sustainable community elements and to provide the basic information for planning and activating the sustainable community in multi-family housing complexes. As a social survey research among Seoul metropolitan residents, data were collected from October 20 to November 4 in 2013. 172 data were analyzed using SPSS 20 and used statistical methods like frequency, t-test, one-way ANOVA and factor analysis. The major findings were as follows. Firstly, respondents had high community consciousness in terms of necessity and interests. However, actual interactions among neighbors were low in reality. Secondly, physical arrangement of community facilities was the most important element among sociocultural factors for sustainable community activation. Also, economic elements were evenly distributed and showed above average. Thirdly, demand of the community activated complexes and intention to live in were relatively high. Intention to participate in operating the sustainable community was relatively low.
In conclusion, because of the people already have a high level of community consciousness, it is important to improve the community facilities and community programs to meet the needs of residents. Also, planned community considering sustainable community elements would be helpful for future generations" sustainable housing culture.
