This study investigates the acquisition of English intransitive verbs(unergatives, alternating unaccusatives, non-alternating unaccusatives) associated with the lexical representation with respect to the logical problem of language acquisition. Therefore, the focus of this study is to find whether the internal representation of Korean learners is different from that of English native speakers. In the results of two acceptability judgement tasks, Korean learners in the steady state had the same internal representation of non-alternating unaccusatives as English native speakers, whereas the internal representation of alternating unaccusatives differed due to the overpassivization phenomenon on the class. The reason for the overpassivization phenomenon is that Korean learners cannot have access to the syntactic and semantic constraint on alternating unaccusatives. Consequently, it is a notable new finding that there is not the logical problem of acquisition in alternating unaccusatives because the finding is contrary to previous studies’ expectation that L2 learners in the final stage of acquisition would recover from overpassivization.
