Houses that are ill-adapted to climate conditions and local needs represent a risk to their inhabitants regarding extreme events as well as social and economic development. Therefore it is important, especially for the poorer and therefore usually more vulnerable parts of the community, to adapt houses to current climate conditions and climate change. To address the social component, it is crucial to involve the beneficiaries in the adaptation process. Community based adaptation (CBA) is the most prominent approach of participation in this field. Regarding this approach there are four main points of critique that need to be addressed if it is used for an adaptation process. Further, there has to be a careful coordination of all participants of the process. Atop of the local community these include government agencies, NGOs, architects, designers and craftsmen. There are some similarities between different adaptation projects which leads to the call of a ‘systems approach’ that can help handle the complexities of adaptation processes through coordinating action plans for each of the stakeholders involved. A possible target is the exchange of knowledge within the CBA community to create a better understanding on how to build the resilience of the most vulnerable.
