The aim of this study was to systematically estimate the pattern changes of finger joint angles by object shape, size, and weight during gripping. Ten male graduate and undergraduate students participated in the experiment. The finger joint angles were measured using a VICON motion analysis system. The participants picked up the objects using a 5G hand posture (Power grip). The participants were asked to lift the object to an approximately shoulder height and maintain this posture for 3 s. The independent variables were object shape (cylinder and square pillar), object size (2, 4, 6, and 8 cm), and object weight (400, 800, 1400, and 1800 g). The dependent variables were 15 joint angles of the fingers. Object shape affected the flexion angles of the MCP joints of the index, middle, and ring finger. The angle difference was about 10 degrees between cylindrical objects and square pillar objects. Object size affected the flexion angles of all joints except the CMC and IP joints of the thumb. Overall, the MCP joint was most influenced by object size, followed by the PIP and DIP joints. Object weight was not significant compared with object shape and object size. The angles of all the finger joints showed differences of about 5 degrees between 400 g objects and 1800 g objects. In conclusion, the major factor affecting the finger joint angle is object size; the joint angle increased linearly as the object size decreased.
