This study analyzes the spillover effects of third countries’ free trade agreements (FTAs) on the bilateral trade between 62 country-pairs over the period of 2003-2013. A gravity model is expanded to measure the spillover effects of third-countries’ FTAs on other nearby bilateral trading relationships by including a weighted third-country FTA contiguity matrix with a set of independent variables and a spatially-weighted FTA variable in the model. The thirdcountries’ FTAs are expected to either expand or reduce other bilateral trade depending on whether they act as substitutes or complements to the trade between a given pair of countries. Thus, this study expands the existing literature and analyses by its use of the gravity model with a weighted third-countries’ FTA contiguity matrix. The main finding is that the FTAs signed by neighbors or third-countries generate more trade flows between trading partners external to the third-countries’ FTAs. The FTAs play a role akin to FTA hubs to extend the trade flows. It implies that the nations benefit when they trade with partners that have signed other FTAs, using the FTAs as trade network neutrons.
