This study is to discover and introduce calligrapher Hoi-san Park Ki-don (朴基敦, 1873~1947)’s calligraphic works, who worked actively in Daegu in early modern age and to notify his name as a calligrapher. Park Ki-don, as a representative calligrapher in Daegu during 1930’s and 1940’s, he left sophisticated calligraphic works including tablets of 〈Tripitaka Koreana〉 in Haeinsa Temple but meanwhile, they were not known. This is the first study on Park Ki-don, and so his lifetime and companionship focused on Si-am Lee Jik-hyeon(1850~1928) and Seok-je Seo Byeong-oh(1862~1936) are studied.
It is a unique case for Park Ki-don who turned his life from a businessman to a calligrapher. He was from a noble family and entered in government service, but because of the protectorate Treaty between Korea and Japan in 1905 he left Seoul living from the government service and settled down in Daegu. He worked actively as a commerce and industry businessman starting a lumbermill and a publishing company and so on, and he served the first chairman of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Daegu. As a local worthy, Park Ki-don worked in education and physical education part, but since the age after the age 50 he stopped the social activities and indulged in calligraphy.
The current state of Park Ki-don’s calligraphic works are arranged with their production year, and Park Ki-dong’s calligraphy is divided into two different parts; the former part, which is the training period and after the year of 1934, after the age of 62 when Hoi-san style started to appear. Park Ki-don was a calligrapher who mainly wrote Semi-cursive and Cursive style (Haengchoseo) and he was good at writing in large characters and fine characters. He achieved his unique world of calligraphy with high-proficiency in keen and technical stroke.
