The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of the grief level of bereaved elderly living alone on their suicidal ideation and the mediation effects of depression. For this, a survey was conducted 360 elderlies living alone who experienced spousal bereavement in the Daejeon, Chungnam area and 296 cases were analyzed. The main result of this study is as follows. First, the grief level of bereaved elderly living alone has no direct impact upon their suicidal ideation. Second, it is evident that the suicidal ideation of bereaved elderly living alone is intensified as the level of their depression escalates. Third, the depression acts like complete mediator in the relationship between grief level and suicidal ideation. Based on these results, practical implications of intervention strategies were discussed that could prevent suicide of bereaved elderly living alone.
