This study aims to survey the short, but dynamic history of the translation of Western literature into the Korean language. Here “literature” means, not only literary texts, but also a comprehensive group of texts including philosophy, history etc. Although the Korean language, in the early twentieh century, had been progressing toward a modern language, it has continued to bear some defects for functioning as “an effectively translated language from other Western ones.” This problem has not yet been clearly settled. So the conditions for an accurate and articulate translation into the Korean language are more difficult than those in other Western languages.
To be a competent Korean translator of texts written in Western languages I think, a very rare and essential ability is required. What is this special ability? When Western texts are being translated into Korean, it sometimes happens that Korean vocabulary or grammar is not able to fully capture the full conceptual depth and complexity of the original texts. Yet it is also imperative that translations must be produced, so many active Korean translators are venturing to transform some parts of the contents or sentence forms of original Western texts, in order to make them more approachable to average Korean readers. The result of these attempts cannot entirely be blamed as “distortions”, because such attempts may be, according to the context, inevitable regarding the contemporary situation of Korean language, which could be summarized as “a comparative lack of available vocabulary” and “heterogeneity of Korean grammar and sentence structure compared with Western languages”.
As a result, the above mentioned essential ability of Korean translators of Western texts is that, he or she should be able to demonstrate a fluency in the Korean language which properly reflects the ideas or material affairs that Western texts are presenting. So the task of Korean translations may be called now, in some sense, not only a linguistic phenomenon, but also a pioneering of the possibilities in developing the Korean language’s expressiveness. Ideal Korean translators should be fighters for enhancing the capability of representing things and ideas in the Korean language. When this ideal is able to be realized, then the remaining duties will be (1) challenging and communicating with the Western thoughts and worlds, and (2) setting a place for an intellectual confrontation with Westerners, in both cases in the Korean language. This is directly linked with a consensus on to what extent the quality of the Korean language must be enhanced, as a language for serious literature.
