The purpose of this paper is to critically review the debate in Marxist economics on the crisis and collapse of capitalism after the global economic crisis of 2008. In my view, the 2008 crisis can be explained as a combination of the financial crisis resulting from neoliberalism and a cyclical crisis. However, few Marxist authors understood the twofold aspect of the 2008 crisis. Most of them expected the end of neoliberalism or the collapse of the capitalist system, and denied a cyclical phase change to recovery and boom under neoliberalism. This can be attributed to a misunderstanding of Marx’s crisis theory and a lack of state intervention theory. So, the critique in this paper is particularly based on the reconstruction of Marx’s crisis theory and the state monopoly capitalism theory. The present state of capitalism is that 1. the financial crisis has considerably eased, even though capitalism has not yet escaped from the structural crisis of neoliberalism, 2. neoliberal financial capitalism has been restored through the intervention of the capitalist state, and 3. the business cycle has already entered a phase of recovery or a boom phase especially in the US.
