This study surveys the characteristics of Korean college students' utterance which triggers native teachers' negotiation of meaning in English conversation classes. Lack of basic English knowledge such as unknown words, mispronunciation, ungrammatical structure, unclear sentences, etc accounted for almost half of negotiation of meaning in the Korean college classroom interactions. Around one fifth of students' triggering expressions were related to problems of discourse such as distinction of information status, topic shift, and provision of explicit information. Around one third of student utterance had problems at pragmatic level such as socio-cultural mismatch, logical contradiction, flout of politeness, etc. In particular, it is noticeable that native teachers who have taught Korean university students often tried to positively negotiate students' utterance which threatens their face. Also, fluent Native teachers often used unknown words in order to intentionally draw students' attention to the words and trigger negotiation of meaning. (Korea Naval Academy)
